All Star with Michael Jackson - What More Can I Give

Song Info:

"What More Can I Give" (also "Todo Para Ti" in Spanish) is a song written by American musician Michael Jackson and recorded by a supergroup of singers following the September 11 attacks in 2001. The inspiration for the song had initially come to Jackson after a meeting with the President of South Africa Nelson Mandela in the late 1990s. The song was to be premiered at a Jackson concert, but the singer failed to perform it. The song also failed to gain an official release, despite the pop singer having stated that it would be issued as a charity single for the refugees of the Kosovo War, which ended in 1999.

Following the September 11 attacks in 2001, Jackson rewrote "What More Can I Give". Jackson and other artists recorded the new version of the song shortly afterward; the other artists included Beyoncé Knowles, Celine Dion, Luther Vandross, Mariah Carey and Usher. In addition, a Spanish language version of the song was recorded. Entitled "Todo Para Ti", its lyrics were written by musician Rubén Blades.

"What More Can I Give" was scheduled for release as a charity single, in the hope that $50 million would be raised to aid the survivors and the families of victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The plan, however, never came to fruition and the reasons why have varied between sources and the individuals involved. One newspaper stated that the release of the song was abandoned after it emerged that the executive producer had directed pornographic movies. The producer, Marc Schaffel, denied that he was to blame, and offered the opinion that the song was not released as part of a marketing ploy by Sony Music.

"What More Can I Give" was played on the radio for the first time in late 2002. The debut airing was made without permission by radio station WKTU-FM in New York. The following year, on October 27, 2003, "What More Can I Give" was made available to the public by way of digital download. Proceeds from the sale of the song went to children's charities.

Backstreet Boys - More Than That

Song Info:

"More Than That" is the third single by the Backstreet Boys from their album Black & Blue, released on November 21, 2000. It reached #27 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and ran for 20 weeks, and #12 on the UK Singles Chart, ending their 13th consecutive Top 10 run, the last being The Call which peaked at #8. It performed poorly compared to other singles of the Backstreet Boys, selling only 800,000 copies and failing to reach Top 10 in any of their main markets. However, it did very well on TRL where the video was retired on August 17, 2001.

A radio remix was made by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins for radio play, as well as the music video. The main difference between the versions is an alternate percussion track, and generally remixed levels.

Backstreet Boys - I'll Never Break Your Heart

Song Info:

"I'll Never Break Your Heart" is the second single by the Backstreet Boys from their self-titled debut album. It was later included on their US debut album as well. The song was first released in December 1995, then in 1996 for a few other markets, and subsequently was re-released June 1998 off of the U.S. debut. The song peaked at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the U.S., but fared better on the adult contemporary chart, where it became the group's first number one song on this chart.[2] Outside the U.S., the song peaked at #8 on the UK Singles Chart and also went to the Top 10 in Australia, Germany, The Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland.

The song replaced "I'll Never Find Someone Like You" on the album, which was to be the band's first single. The band's label, Jive Records, had not committed to using the song for the band, and as a result, it was offered to singer Keith Martin, who accepted it and released it as a single on the Bad Boys soundtrack, and his own albums It's Long Overdue and All the Hits. Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell supposedly discovered this when he heard Martin's song play on the radio one day.[3]

"I'll Never Break Your Heart" was supposedly recorded over two weeks, because Littrell and A. J. McLean, the two lead vocalists on the song, had colds.[3] Spanish vocals for the song, titled "Nunca Te Haré Llorar", were later recorded in Zurich along with a Spanish version of "Anywhere For You".

Britney Spears - Born To Make You Happy

Song Info:

"Born to Make You Happy" is a mid-tempo bubblegum pop song written by Kristian Lundin and Andreas Carlsson, and produced by Lundin for Britney Spears' debut studio album "...Baby One More Time" (1999). It was chosen as the album's fourth single in some selected territories such as Europe. The song became Spears' second number-one hit in Ireland and the United Kingdom.

The song was written by Andreas Carlsson and Kristian Lundin, and was also produced by the latter. It's composed in the key of D Major,[1] Spears' vocal range in this song is over an octave from F3-B4. Lyrically, in this mid-tempo ballad, Spears recalls a relationship she desires to correct, not quite understanding what went wrong as she comes to the realization that she was "born to make you happy."

The CD single released a 'Demo' version of the track, calling it a "Bonus Remix." The track contains completely alternate vocals and more of an acoustic take of the track. This alternate recording shows off Spears' vocals. This version was recorded in March 1998, while the released version being re-recorded later in 1998.

Despite the song's innocence and purity, the song was originally sexual. The song was so sexual it made the then 18 year-old Britney Spears uncomfortable to record it saying "'This may be a little old for me.' Because of the image thing, I don't want to go over the top." The song was later rewritten into the innocent ballad it is now.

Boyzone - Father And Son

Song Info:

"Father and Son" is a popular song written and performed by English singer-songwriter, Yusuf Islam (then known as Cat Stevens) on his 1970 album Tea for the Tillerman.

The song frames an exchange between a father not understanding a son's desire to break away and shape a new life, and the son who cannot really explain himself but knows that it is time for him to seek his own destiny. To echo this, Stevens sings in a deeper register for the father's lines, while using a higher, more emotive one for those of the son. Additionally, there are backing vocals provided by Stevens' guitarist and friend, Alun Davies, singing an unusual chorus of simple words, and sentences such as, "No", "Go and make this decision", beginning mid-song, so softly, they are only perceptible with a slight increase in volume towards the end of the song.

Boyzone - Baby Can I Hold You

Song Info:

"Baby Can I Hold You" is the third single from American contemporary folk artist Tracy Chapman, released in late 1988. The song succeeded in reaching the top fifty in the U.S., unlike its predecessor, "Talkin' 'bout A Revolution", but it failed to become Chapman's second top forty hit, peaking at #48. It did, however, give her a second chart entry on the U.S. Adult Contemporary charts, peaking at #19 in early 1989. (Her first adult contemporary hit was "Fast Car", which reached #7 on the AC charts.) Given the commercial decline Chapman suffered following the release of her second album Crossroads, "Baby Can I Hold You" also became her last top fifty hit until 1996's "Give Me One Reason".

Neil Diamond recorded the song for his 1989 album, The Best Years of Our Lives and became the first of many artists to cover the song.[1]

Chapman subsequently re-recorded the song as a duet with Luciano Pavarotti for the CD Pavarotti and Friends for Cambodia and Tibet. And it was re-released as a single in promotion of the hits package "Collection" which hit #3 in the UK in 2001.

Carrie Underwood - All-American Girl

Song Info:

"All-American Girl" is a song composed by country pop singer Carrie Underwood; Ashley Gorley and Kelley Lovelace. It is the second single from Underwood's second studio album, Carnival Ride, released in the United States on December 17, 2007.

"All-American Girl" is the second single for which Underwood shares a writing credit, the first being "So Small", which preceded it. The song is a mid-tempo country-pop song, with a soaring chorus. Underwood stated in an issue of Entertainment Weekly that the high note during the bridge in the song is the highest note she has ever hit.[3]

The song centers around a "beautiful, wonderful, perfect all-American girl." The first verse tells the story of a father hoping for a baby boy to continue his legacy, but "when the nurse came in with a little pink blanket, all those big dreams changed". The baby girl now has her father "wrapped around her finger", and his heart belongs to that "all-American girl." The second verse then shifts to 16 years later when the girl is now a teenager who falls for the "senior football star." Just like the girl's father, she becomes the center of the boy's world. The final bridge tells of when the girl and boy get married and are expecting "one of their own". When she asks the boy what he's hoping for he replies with "one just like you": an "all-American girl." Underwood said the song is in part her autobiography.[4]

The song's current digital sales in the U.S. already passed the million mark selling over a million copies and certified Platinum by the RIAA.

Celine Dion - It's All Coming Back To Me Now

Song Info:

"It's All Coming Back to Me Now" is a power ballad, written by Jim Steinman.[1] According to Steinman the song was inspired by Wuthering Heights, and was an attempt to write "the most passionate, romantic song" he could ever create.[2] Meat Loaf has said the song was intended for Bat out of Hell II and given to the singer in 1986, but that they both decided to use "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" for Bat II, and save this song for Bat III.[3][4]

The song has had three major releases, all roughly belonging to the soft rock genre. The first version appeared on the concept album Original Sin, recorded by Pandora's Box. It was then recorded by Céline Dion for her album Falling into You, and her version was a commercial hit, reaching No. 2 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and No. 3 in the UK Singles Chart. Meat Loaf recorded it as a duet with Norwegian singer Marion Raven for Bat III and released it as a single in 2006.

A music video was produced for each of the three versions; death is a recurring theme in all of these videos, fitting in with the suggestion in Virgin's press release for Original Sin that "in Steinman's songs, the dead come to life and the living are doomed to die."[5] This is particularly evident when the dead characters seem to be resurrected in the memories of the main vocalist. Although in the case of Celine Dion's video, the theme is less about the living being doomed and more about a lost love.

The music video to "Love You Lately" is available on Powter's website. The plot is about a girl (played by Rachael Leigh Cook), from the country-side who moves to the city, seeking a job and possibly a better life. She become disillusioned with her job and feels lost, out of place in the strange new world. Both she and her boyfriend cannot seem to come to terms with their parting, continually looking at past photos and recollecting the beautiful memories of times together. At the end of the video, she decides to pick up the phone to call her boyfriend, who already seems to have anticipated her call. The video ends of with a studio light being left on, tribute to the song's lyrics: 'Cause there's a thousand lights that'll make you feel brand new, but if you ever lose your way, I'll leave one on for you."

British pop girl group Girls Aloud recorded a cover of "I'll Stand by You", produced by Brian Higgins and his production team Xenomania to be the official Children in Need song in 2004. The track was announced a single just ten days before its 15 November 2004 release.[1] It became Girls Aloud's second number one on the UK Singles Chart.[2] The song appears on Girls Aloud's second album What Will the Neighbours Say?. The first version of "I'll Stand by You" that Xenomania created was described as a "weird, modernist breakbeat version", which was scrapped upon deciding an updated version of the original song would be better suited for Children in Need.[3] Girls Aloud toured radio stations across the United Kingdom and performed an acoustic arrangement of "I'll Stand by You" that they arranged themselves.

"I'm Yours" is the first single released by Jason Mraz from his third studio album We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. The song was originally released on a limited edition EP called Extra Credit as a demo in 2005 to promote his second studio album Mr. A–Z. It was performed in his 2006 gigs and already became a crowd favorite before its release. "I'm Yours" was nominated for Grammy Award for Song of the Year[1] and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the 51st Grammy Awards. It was also used for the Australian Seven Network's promotion of the season premiere of Packed to the Rafters.

"I'm Yours" was immensely successful in the U.S. on the Billboard charts. At 76 weeks on the Hot 100, it holds the record for most weeks spent on the chart, breaking the previous record set by LeAnn Rimes' song "How Do I Live" in 1998. It is currently the third best selling digital song of all time in the U.S., selling in excess of 5 million downloads.

Leon Jackson - When You Believe

Song Info:

"When You Believe" is an Academy Award-winning song composed by Stephen Schwartz for the 1998 DreamWorks animated feature The Prince of Egypt. A pop version of "When You Believe" was produced as a single with additional music by writer-producer Babyface for the film's soundtrack album. It was the main theme of the film and was released as a single by American singers Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston as the soundtrack's first single in 1998; it was also the first single from Houston's album My Love Is Your Love and the second from Carey's compilation album #1's.

When You Believe was recorded by The X Factor winner Leon Jackson in December 2007. The single was available to download from midnight after the result of the show on December 15, 2007, and a CD was rush-released mid-week, on December 19, 2007. This is unusual as most new singles are released on a Monday to gain maximum sales for the UK Singles Chart the following Sunday, although the previous two X Factor winners have had their singles released in this fashion, in order for them to compete to be the Christmas number-one single, which they all duly became. A video for the single was made by the final four of the series; Jackson, Rhydian Roberts, Same Difference and Niki Evans. However, only the winner's version of the song and video was released.

The song ended 2007 as the year's 4th biggest-selling single in the UK[28] and remained number one into 2008.[29] However, this version of the song only managed to stay in the top 40 for 7 weeks, despite being the fastest selling of 2007. It also soon disappeared from the top 100, and was gone by late February at the earliest.[30]
